Lipoprotein lipase activity in marasmic type of protein-calorie malnutrition.

چکیده
Kwashiorkor and marasmus constitute the two major syndromes of protein-calorie malnutrition encountered in infants and young children in many parts of the world. The clinical and metabolic characteristics of these syndromes differ significantly from one another, one difference being the fat metabolism. The increase of free fatty acids (FFA) in plasma has been accepted as the key factor causing fatty liver in kwashiorkor (Korn, 1955; Feigelson et al., 1961; Lewis et al., 1964; Fletcher, 1966; Bar-on and Stein, 1968). The role of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in the mobilization of FFA is well known. In this paper, plasma FFA and LPL levels, as well as the effect of heparin on the activation of this enzyme and its kinetics in plasma in various stages of marasmus will be presented.

Pattern of protein-energy malnutrition in Sudanese children and comparison with some other Middle East countries.
Tne classification of protein-calorie malnutrition suggested by the Wellcome Trust Working party was employed in 119 children under the age of 4 years admitted to Khartoum Hospital with severe malnutrition between May and December 1973. Our findings compare closely with findings from other centres using the same classification. All children were below 80% of the Boston standard for weight. 58% ...
متن کاملSerum levels of immunoglobulins in marasmic infants.
The syndrome of protein-calorie malnutrition is associated with an increased frequency of infections which often precipitate or aggravate the state of malnutrition. The importance and the farreaching implications of the interaction between malnutrition and infections, a predominantly synergistic one, have been stressed by Scrimshaw, Taylor, and Gordon (1959) and more recently by the Joint FAO/W...
متن کاملAngptl3-null mice show low plasma lipid concentrations by enhanced lipoprotein lipase activity.
Angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) is a secreted protein with both angiogenesis and lipid metabolism functions. We generated knockout mice that failed to express the Angptl3 gene, and analyzed the lipid metabolism. Angptl3-null mice, fed a normal diet or a high-fat, high-calorie (HFC) diet, revealed markedly low plasma lipid concentrations, especially plasma triglyceride concentration, although the ...
متن کاملPre-and postoperative nutritional evaluation in patients with chagasic megaesophagus.
Chagasic megaesophagus is a chronic disease that courses with progressive dysphagia, regurgitation and protein-calorie malnutrition. Advanced or recurrent megaesophagus can be treated with Serra Dória's operation (cardioplasty, partial gastrectomy and gastrojejunal Roux-en-Y anastomosis). A nutritional evaluation was performed on 27 patients (mean age 58 +/- 10 years) with chagasic megaesophagu...
متن کاملCortisol Levels in Protein-calorie Malnutrition
The two clinical syndromes of protein-calorie malnutrition-kwashiorkor and marasmus, have been widely studied. Striking differences have been observed between kwashiorkor and marasmus, both with respect to the clinical picture and the biochemical profile. One such difference is the exaggerated hyperglycaemic response of the marasmic infant to epinephrine in contrast to the poor response of the ...
